Joaquin Phoenix turned down the role of being Doctor Strange for Marvel's 2016 movie, so the director, Scott Derrickson, is reportedly looking for replacement.
According to Screen Rant, Marvel is considering many celebrities, including Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling. Despite the company being confident that its audience will be okay with not having a big movie star play the role of the Doctor, three actors are noted as "frontrunners" for the role.
The Wrap reported that odds are, three high profile names will replace Phoenix for the role: first is Benedict Cumberbatch, who seems to be all over these days. Screen Rant noted that although a lot of people would love to have Cumberbatch for the role, his other projects may render him unable to do so, especially with the fourth season of BBC's hit "Sherlock" planning to shoot at the same time that Derrickson will start production for Doctor Strange.
Colin Farrell, although a great actor in his own right is another star in the running for the role, however, Cinema Blend noted that with another season of "True Detective" in the works, his schedule will be a little less flexible.
Finally, the last contender for the role is Keannu Reeves, who is likely to take the part, but his availability reportedly depends on the success of his current project, "John Wick".
If the three of these actors are not interested in being Doctor Strange, there are others who are more willing to take on the project, According to Comic Book Resources, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke are eager to jump at the chance.
Doctor Strange is going to be part of Marvel's phase three of superheroes and is rumored to be released on July 8, 2016.
