In 24 hours Apple will finally give the world what it has been licking its lips over for the past few months: details about the iPhone 5. The press conference on September 12 will once again put Apple back in the driving seat of the smartphone market, and competitors know that, which is probably why the Galaxy S3 is getting a price drop.
Website PopHerald reports that third-party retailers such as Amazon have slashed prices on Samsung Galaxy S3 models by as much as $70.
The website states the 16GB, unlocked SIM-free Galaxy S3 is now $580, down from $650. The 32GB unlocked model is now $630 instead of $700. They also report that the Verizon Galaxy S3 is cheaper through Amazon Wireless.
The timing of the price drops is a clear indication that Apple's competitors are concerned. The iPhone 5 has been setting the internet on fire with everybody scrambling to report leaked images and rumors. It has analysts predicting 10 million sales in one week, and that the iPhone 5 will be the biggest consumer electronics device of all time.
Samsung is also rolling out four new colors for the Galaxy S3, Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black, and Titanium Gray. They will join the existing Marble White and Pebble Blue models.
Samsung is clearly trying to bolster its lineup to compete better with the iPhone 5 after losing a legal battle against Apple in the United States that cost them $1 billion and has Android phone manufacturers on the defensive. The Korean company will also be releasing the Galaxy Note 2 by the end of 2012 in the United States, and might even have a Galaxy S3 Mini out soon.
