"Sherlock" fans have been excited for the next season since... well, since the end of Season 3. Unfortunately for them, there's still a long way to go, considering how each episode of the BBC series is like a full-length movie.
Christian Today reports that the Christmas special is coming soon (okay, "soon" means Christmas next year, not this year) and already, Benedict Cumberbatch (who plays the titular role) has some news in store.
First off, the Christmas special will give "Sherlock" a difficult time during the festivities, and viewers will see a totally different side to him.
Cumberbatch said, "We've never seen [Sherlock] being really pressed yet, so that will be interesting."
Filming has not even begun yet, though, so Cumberbatch has not spilled any more information about it. In an article by Breathe Cast, the actor reportedly said to Empire Magazine, "I can't give any plot away... but their pitch for the Christmas special and the series beyond that is just phenomenal." But even though production is still ways away, fans have already clamored for updates and teasers.
The Independent UK also reported that Martin Freeman (who plays Sherlock's best friend, Watson) hinted of surprises, telling fans to "expect the unexpected."
The duo are very in demand for roles in both film and television lately, but they're willing to take the time to do "Sherlock". Cumberbatch has said, "As long as the ideas are still there and the audience still wants it and as long as Martin and I are not to infirm that we can no longer remember the lines and shuffle around the set, I'd love to do it into old age, I really would."
Co-creator Steven Moffat has also claimed that the new season will be worth the wait, considering that it will top the epic finale of last season, and with whispers about Sherlock's nemesis, Moriarty being back from the dead.
In a report by the Hollywood Reporter, Moffat said during the Emmy Awards in August, "We practically reduced our cast to tears by telling them the plan. Honestly, Mark [Gatiss] and myself are so excited with what we've got coming up, probably more excited than we've ever been about Sherlock. We've got a very, very good set of ideas. Honestly I think we can [top the last series]."
With the co-creators dropping epic ideas left and right and a very dedicated actor in the role, we may be seeing more of Cumberbatch's "Sherlock" in the future.
