Wednesday night saw a two top-seeded players advance to the semifinals and major upset by No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdyck.
American Serena Williams defeated Serbian Ana Ivanovic in two sets 6-1 and 6-3. The No. 4-seeded player destroyed Ivanovic in a quick sweep to reach the semifinals. Williams will play against No. 10-seeded Sara Errani from Italy for the semifinals, ESPN reported.
No. 3-ranked Maria Sharapova also advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday, defeating No. 11 Marion Bartoli. According to ESPN, the Russian player will go against No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka for her semifinal match.
On the men's side, No. 1-seeded Roger Federer was upset by No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic in four sets 7-6(1), 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3. According to ESPN, the five-time U.S. Open champion told reporters, "I just didn't come up with the goods tonight. It was unfortunate."
Scotsman and No. 3-ranked Andy Murray defeated Croatian Marin Cilic in four sets 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 and 6-0 to advance to the semifinals. Murray will play against Berdych in the semifinals on Saturday, ESPN reported.
On Thursday, No. 4-ranked David Ferrer from Spain battled Serbian Janko Tipsarevic for a chance to reach the semifinals. The evening match at Arthur Ashe Stadium will see No. 7-ranked Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina play against No. 2 Novak Djokovic from Serbia for their quarterfinals match. Del Potro defeated No. 20 Andy Roddick on Wednesday in what became Roddick's last professional game.
Fans will also be treated to a fun exhibition doubles match between John McEnroe with actor Adam Sandler and Jim Courier with actor Kevin James.
