Manuel Uribe Garza, who was considered the world's fattest man, died on Monday in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, after suffering from renal complications at the age of 48.
According to information from EFE, the Mexican man, nicknamed "Meme", was taken to the Dr. José Eleuterio González University Hospital on May 2 due to complications stemming from a bacteria that affected his kidneys, to the surprise of his family and friends.
The man who once weighed 560 kg (1234 lbs) and who in recent years managed to reduce his weight to 349 kg, was a very positive person who sought to get the most out of everything he did, his mother, Otilia Garza, told EFE.
"He was very positive, he got the most out of everything, he was planning his birthday party, he wanted to have a barbecue," said Mrs. Garza.
Manuel's case was publicly known in 2007, shocking the entire world by being considered the world's most obese man, weighing just a little under 600 kg. Uribe Garza told his story to the local media in Mexico, highlighting his obesity problems since his childhood, his complications during his 20s and how he found it very difficult to get a job and develop his social life normally, and was forced to remain in a small room for years, condemned to a completely sedentary life.
It was the Discovery Channel that presented a documentary showing Manuel as "The world's heaviest man", consolidating him as a public figure and who in 2007 officially received the Guinness World Record for being the most obese person in the world with a total of 560 kg.
Manuel Uribe got married to Claudia Solis at the Lions Club in the city of Monterrey, where he arrived with the help of a forklift.
Manuel's obesity problem was complicated. Doctors from around the world offered to treat him and help him reduce his weight; however, he only managed to lose between 230 kg and 250 kg.
