September 5 saw two mobile phone companies duke it out as Nokia announced their Windows 8 phone and Motorola and Verizon showcased a new Droid RAZR phone.

While Nokia's offering seemed to flounder in the stock market, Motorola's seems to be promising.

At the incredibly low price of $99, Verizon plans on releasing the Motorola Droid RAZR M "beore the holidays," according to ComputerWorld.

The phone will feature a giant 4.3-inch screen (in case you were wondering, that's bigger than than the 4-inch screen the next-gen Apple iPhone is supposed to be), and 0.8 inches larger than the current iPhone 4S).

This was a point Motorola senior vice president of management Rick Osterloh elicited.

"Our screen has 40 percent more screen area than an iPhone 4S," he said. "What you get is more screen per square inch than ever before."

The smartphone will feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, an 8-megpixel camera, and 8GB of internal storage. Its display will run at a 960X540 resolution. It will also take advantage of Verizon's 4G LTE network, which the leaked name Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE implies.

Motorola also introduced a larger, Motorola Droid RAZR HD which sported a 4.7-inch screen that Motorola claims will give up to 20 hours to talk time.

It might not be a direct competitor to the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S3, but the Motorola Droid M is a great pickup for casual consumers looking to get into the smartphone market. Ice Cream Sandwich lacks some features that its sequel, Jelly Bean, and Apple's IOS 6 has, but it is still a solid introductory smartphone platform.
