If there's one topic that has been dominating the tech sphere it's the iPhone 5. After months of speculation, Apple has invited the media to a press conference on September 12 that should reveal the next-gen handset to the public. Leaked images (if they are authentic) have already revealed many details about the handset, and now a new one shows that the iPhone 5 won't be called the 'iPhone 5,' but rather 'The new iPhone.'
The naming scheme follows Apple's recent 'The new iPad.'
The image, originally posted by the blog iPhonenieuwsblog.nl shows an employee at a printing press holding up what should be the next-gen iPhone's packaging. The packaging has the words 'The new iPhone,' an iOS 6 logo, and shows a taller, black iPhone that displays five rows of app icons displayed.
The current iPhone's screen size is 3.5 inches which allows it to display four rows of app icons. The next iPhone is expected to have a screen size of 4 inches, and early testing of the iOS 6 by 9to5Mac at this size show that it scales the display to show five rows of app icons.
If Apple is going with the 'new' tag on its entire mobile lineup, then there's a good chance that the next-gen iPods will be called 'The new iPod.'
So what exactly could the 'new iPhone' hold in store for us?
Well, as mentioned before, the biggest difference will be the size. The new iPhone should have a 4 inch screen and be thinner than any iPhone before. It will also come with 4G LTE and NFC capabilities as well, according to leaked parts and reports. The current dock size will also be scrapped, and a new, smaller dock that will become the standard across Apple products will be introduced with the new iPhone.
One thing is for certain: that the phone will ship with iOS 6, Apple's next iteration of their mobile operating system.
Reports point to a release date of September 21, nine days after Apple makes its initial announcement.
