Pretty young things are going to grace the screens in their bikinis again as the 2013 movie "Spring Breakers" is slated to get a sequel.
The working title, "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming" is currently under development by Wild-Bunch, a Paris-based production power house. According to Screen Daily, "Trainspotting" writer, Irvine Welsh, will pen the script.
The site also reports that the plot for the sequel will involve the Spring Breakers "in a battle with an extreme militant Christian sect who are attempting to convert them."
There's been no word yet, however, if the original cast (which included Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Rachel Korine) will make appearances in the sequel.
Vincent Maraval from Wild Bunch said, "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original."
It will, however, include references from the original film, but whether or not James Franco's crazy character, Alien, will make an appearance, is also unclear. He did, however, tell MTV last year that he is interested in making another "Spring Breakers" movie.
He shared, "When we [he and Harmony Korine, director of the first film] were making the movie, there was talk of a prequel. My character and Gucci Mane's character were supposed to have been former friends, so we at one time talked about, 'What was that like? Let's make that movie! So there's that. There's a prequel version, or there's the version of Alien's friend or something. I don't know."
Unfortunately, Korine won't be directing this time around. The job is given to Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund, whose background lies more on music videos than in films. No word yet on who will be cast as the new set of "Spring Breakers."
Spring Breakers 2 is rumored to be premiere in the 2014 Cannes Film Festival this May.
