According to 49ers.com, Brian McCarthy, NFL president of communications, announced on April 14, 2014 that the 2014 regular schedule will not be released within the week. McCarthy made the announcement via Twitter, posting, "Contrary to some tweets, the #NFL '14 schedule will not be released this week." He added, "We will announce when we will announce it."
He also added another tweet, saying that the schedules for all 32 clubs are still incomplete at the moment.
Many NFL fans and media experts look forward to the release of NFL schedule. During the offseason, the announcement of schedule tends to increase fans' expectations and make them more excited for future games and the NFL Draft, this time scheduled late, from May 8 to 10. Many speculate that the NFL Draft may have been pushed to finish the regular season schedule.
The Seattle Times also notes that fans have to wait a while to get more details about the regular season. Some of the news they were looking forward to include when the San Francisco 49ers will be facing key opponents like the current champions Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs, led by its star quarterback Alex Smith. There were also questions as to the venue of the opening games.
In the meantime, 49ers fans can settle for the preseason calendars. The 49ers will start away from home against the Baltimore Ravens. The following games will be San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. They will finally face the Houston Texans to finish the preseason. The 49ers had the fourth-most difficult schedule in 2014. The NFL follows a rotating schedule which makes it challenging to determine the following year's schedule.
