Actress Kristen Stewart is showing off her wild side starring in a new film, "On The Road," which is an adaptation of Jack Kerouac's cult classic novel of the same name and is being executive produced by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.
The story behind the movie is loosely based on Kerouac's own experiences of the time he spent "on the road" in the 1940s with a number of friends, including Neal Cassady, William S. Borroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Stewart plays the role of Marylou, who is based on Cassady's first wife LuAnne Henderson. Starlet Lindsay Lohan was also considered for this role, however Stewart came out on top. The "Twilight" star's decision to take on this film was not a random one. She tells theage.com that her obsession with Kerouac's "On The Road" began in adolescence.
"It's rare to meet characters in fiction that live so much, that breathe so much," Stewart said in an interview. "I thought, 'I've got to find people like this, people who push me and share my ambitions.' Not that I'm unconventional, but I have slightly different limits and boundaries than most people, and the book says that is okay. I slept with 'On The Road' on my dashboard when I got my [drivers] license. It was the first book that got me into reading."
Stewart joins a stellar superstar cast in this film, which co-stars Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortenson, Elisabeth Moss, Garrett Hedlund, Steve Buscemi and Sam Riley, amongst others.
Before filming commenced for the movie, director Walter Salles insisted that the entire cast participate in a three-week "beatnik boot camp," which Stewart described as nothing but literature about the beatnik generation and listening to audio interviews from Jack Kerouac, according to IMDB.com.
Filming eventually began on August 4, 2010 in Montreal, Canada. The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2012. A shorter version of the film will be shown at The Toronto Film Festival on September 6th before IFC Film's official release date of December 21st. IFC will release the film simultaneously in theaters and through the company's video-on-demand service.
In "On The Road," Stewart appears in a number of nude scenes. Additionally, she engages in a threesome and partakes in the masturbation of two male characters while riding in a car.
"I wanted to do it," Steward announced at the Cannes Film Festival. "I love pushing, I love scaring myself."
