Four people dead, among them the shooter, and 16 injured is the preliminary outcome of a shooting which happened yesterday at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, authorities reported.

The events happened on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 2, when Specialist Iván López, 34, an Iraq veteran, entered the base in his combat uniform and armed with a semi-automatic pistol, reported Reuters.

During the attack, three people lost their lives and 16 more were injured before Iván, was under psychiatric treatment due to anxiety and depression problems, took his life.

John McHugh, the Secretary of the Army, told the media that the soldier joined service in 2008 and had served two tours abroad, one of them for four months in Iraq.

McHugh said that the soldier has never seen direct combat and he had not been injured during his service.

"He was going through a wide variety of treatments and dignoses for mental diseases which went form depression to anxiety and sleep disorders. He was given a series of drugs to face these problems, including Ambien," said McHugh, quoted by Reuters.

On his part, President Obama said that he "is heartbroken", for the events in Fort Hood, and said that an investigation has started to clear up the incident.

"We're going to find out what happened exactly," said the President, who also called the families of the soldiers who lost their lives in the military base.

"We know these families. We know the incredible service and sacrifices they do for our country. Obviously, out thoughts and prayers are with them" said Obama, quoted by the BBC.
