More and more companies are eyeing the smaller, budget tablet market that the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 have helped carve out. Apple should be launching the iPad Mini soon, Amazon will be releasing a new lineup of Kindle Fire and Kindle tablets, and it looks like Lenovo is entering the race too.
The company recently unveiled the A2107 tablet , their 7-inch competitor, at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.
The current king of the 7-inch tablets is the Google Nexus 7. Good press and a solid product at an affordable price ($199) has made this the Android tablet to buy. While the Lenovo A2107 has no pricing just yet, expect it to begin around $199 as well.
The A2107 comes with a 7-inch screen running at a 1024X600 resolution, making it more akin to the 2011 Kindle Fire than the Nexus 7's 1280X800 display. It will also come with a 1GHz dual-core processor, while the Nexus 7 will come with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor.
The Google Nexus 7 also comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, while the A2107 will be launching with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
From the outset, it might look like the Nexus 7 is a more powerful and capable 7-inch tablet than the A2107, but there are some features that set the A2107 apart.
For starters, it's a more rugged tablet. If you're accident prone or suspect that your tablet will take a beating - then you will pleased that the A2107 comes with an internal roll cage enclosure.
The Nexus 7, on the other hand, was plagued by consumer complaints of shoddy display construction that led to it literally falling apart.
The Lenovo A2107 also features a rear-facing 3-megapixel camera, something the Nexus 7 doesn't offer. It will offer Wi-Fi and 3G models, while the Nexus 7 only offers a Wi-Fi model. the A2107 will also be available in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB models, while the Nexus 7 is available in 8GB and 16GB models.
While the Nexus 7 may be the more popular of the two, if any of the A2107's unique features interest you, the tablet is definitely worth a shot.
