Samsung's new Galaxy Note 2 is described as too big for a phone, yet too small for a tablet, therefore the nickname "phablet" has been given to the device.
But since it still shares tablet abilities, how does it fare compared to Apple's latest, iPad 3.
Display/Screen:
When it comes to the display, it comes with the unique Retina Display, which refers to devices and monitors that have a resolution and pixel density so high that a user is unable to track the individual pixels at a normal viewing range, according to Webopedia. Retina Display first launched with the iPhone 4 and has since carried over to various Apple products.
The iPad 3's resolution stands in 2048x1536, 264ppi, and a screen size of 9.7-inches.
For the Galaxy Note 2, its screen size comes in at 5.5-inches with 1,280x720 resolution.
However, while the iPad 3 has Retina Display, the Galaxy Note 2 has Super AMOLED HD display.
The difference?
As CNET's Jessica Dolcourt put it, it comes down it subpixels.
"Each screen pixel is actually composed of red, green, and blue subpixels that can turn on and off in combination to create any supported color combination (turn them all on at full blast to shine white). There are numerous ways to pattern the subpixels. Super AMOLED uses Samsung's PenTile layout, and its pattern of red, green, blue, green (RG-BG) subpixels," wrote Dolcourt.
Processor:
The iPad 3 comes with an A5x Processor, quad-core graphics. According to The iPad Guide, A5X helps power the Retina Display.
"This move by Apple would be required to power quadruple the pixels of the iPad 2 in a Retina display at 2048 x 1536 resolution," reported Fred Straker of The iPad Guide.
The Galaxy Note 2 features 1.6GHz quad-core processor. GHz is short for gigahertz which helps the speed of microprocessors, or clock speed, and it might be the right number for the 5.5-inch device.
Operating System:
The iPad 3 runs on the iOS 5.1, which features Siri to understand the Japanese language, deleting photos form Photo Stream, camera face detection, Genius Mixes and Genius Playlists for iTunes Match subscribers, better audio, updated AT&T network indicator, and problems to battery life.
The new Android Jelly Bean will be the Galaxy Note 2's operating system. The Jelly Bean extends vsync timing for all drawing and animation, gives a CPU input boost, Android Beam which allows wireless data sharing through NFC, Google Now which is a voice assistant similar to Apple's Siri, and a variety of apps.
Camera:
Both devices have a rear and front-facing camera. The Galaxy Note 2's rear-facing camera comes in with 8-megapixels with auto focus and LED Flash. Its front-facing camera is 1.9-megapixels.
The iPad 3 has a 5-megapixel iSight camera with autofocus, face detection, and geotagging. The front-facing camera stands at 0.3 megapixels, significantly lower than the Galaxy Note 2.
Battery Power:
The battery capacity of the iPad 3 is 11,560mAh, while the Samsung device goes at 3,100mAh. What's important here is the higher the mAh, the stronger and healthier the battery life.
