Sisters **Correction** Venus and Serena Williams each won their individual first round games on Tuesday defeating fellow Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Coco Vandeweghe respectively. Venus beat Mattek-Sands in just 62 minutes in two sets 6-3, 6-1, reported USA Today. Sister Serena, ranked No. 4, eased over to the second round in 55 minutes, beating Vandewighe 6-1, 6-1.
Russian star player Maria Sharapova powered through her first round against Hungarian Malinda Czink on Monday in two sets 6-2, 6-2. No. 3-ranked Sharapova is set to play Wednesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium against Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka defeated Belgian Kristen Flipkens 6-2, 6-2 during Wednesday's morning session and prepared for the third round.
In the men's side, American No. 20-ranked Andy Roddick defeated fellow American Rhyne Williams in less than two hours over three sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Serbian No. 2-ranked Novak Djokovic, who was called a favorite by No. 1-ranked Roger Federer on Tuesday, demolished Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.
Scotsman, and Olympic gold medalist, Andy Murray also continued on to the second round, beating Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. No. 3-ranked Murray, who lost to Federer at Wimbledon but later defeated him at the Olympics, is set to play Wednesday night against Croatian Ivan Dodig.
U.S. Open matches are scheduled in two rounds per day. The morning round starts at 11 a.m. EST and the night round begins at 7 p.m. EST. The championship, which is part of the Grand Slam series, began on Monday and is scheduled to end on Sept. 9.
