After barely a year after launching, CNN made the decision to definitely shut down the operations of its branch directed to Latino audiences, according to sources from within the company.

Through a press release, from which EFE quoted a fragment, the network explains the reasons for the shutdown: "CNN Latino was a brave effort to continue CNN's commitment to the Hispanic market in the United States. Unfortunately, despite the great efforts of many talented people, CNN Latino did not meet business expectations."

Conceived as an alternative to the different channels in the same business, such as Univisión or Telemundo, the network began its broadcasts in Los Angeles, and then expanded coverage to New York, Orlando, Tampa, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Miami; however, their objectives were not met, according to The Huffington Post.

Regarding the destiny of those who worked in the project, Elizabeth Bucarán, director of public relations for the news company, did not release exact figures on the approximate number of lay-offs, and limited herself to say that such situation would only affect personnel involved with CNN Latino, not those in CNN itself, whose jobs are safe.

The signal is programmed to be retired this month, and people like Fernando del Rincón, María Elvira Salazar, Andrés Oppenheimer, Ismael Cala and Elizabeth Espinoza participated in the project. Likewise, according to calculations made by CNN in August 2013, published on their website, it reached a third of Latino audiences living in the United States.

The goal, according to the Miami Herald, was to implement a series of alliances with certain channels to offer specific market segments programming filled with local content and reach 65 percent of Latino homes in the US.
