Hundreds of earthquakes have rattled southern California since Sunday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quakes, ranging from magnitudes 2.5 to 5.5, struck near the City of Brawley in Imperial County, Calif.

The Los Angeles Times reported that no deaths or critical injuries resulted from the quakes, but that there were scattered power outages in the area. Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley lost power for nearly three hours and was forced to transfer patients in critical condition to surrounding areas, the Times reported.

Imperial County Public Health Department issued a warning on its Facebook page stating that the USGS advised "an increased likelihood for continued seismic activity for the next 24 hours" in Brawley and Imperial County.

The warning also stated, "This activity could involve earthquakes as large as, or somewhat large than, the Aug 26th magnitude 5.5 earthquake and could cause damage-particularly to older structures."

The Public Health Department also notified residents of a shelter opened at the Imperial Valley College gymnasium in Imperial, Calif. The Los Angeles Times reported that some 20 mobile homes had suffered structural damage, along with other residential damage.

According to TIME, Brawley Mayor George Nava said, "It's not uncommon for us to have earthquake out here, but at this frequency and at this magnitude it's fairly unusual. And the fact that the aftershocks keep coming are a little alarming."

Earthquake swarms are characteristic for the area, known as the Brawley Seismic Zone, TIME reported.
