Byran Singer may not direct the third installment to the X-Men series.

The director told Entertainment Weekly, "I'm co-writing the story and I'm producing it. I'm negotiating to direct. We're in the process. We're trying to figure it out, schedules. My desire would be to direct it."

Singer continued, "I'm still deciding that. Something that happens in this movie causes what's going to happen in that movie."

Singer did reveal themes for the third installment and said, "It will also address historical mutant-cy, meaning the deep past, mutant origins and things like that. It's something that's always intrigued me when we think about our Gods and our history and miracles and powers."

Back in December, Singer confirmed that he was directing the third installment through a tweet. Actor James McAvoy later confirmed the news and stated, "I only heard about it this morning. What's great is that even though it's a sequel, even though it's a franchise, I keep getting to reinvent Charles Xavier and that's amazing."

Singer directed the original X-Men film back in 2001 and was also around for the sequel. He skipped out on the critically panned "X-Men: The Last Stand" and was also not the director for the prequel "X-Men: First Class," which was directed by Matthew Vaughn.

He is currently helming "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which is slated for a May 23, 2014 release date. That film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore and Patrick Stewart among others.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is slated for 2016.
