TIME credited the tablet's size difference from its predecessors while maintaining similar features and battery power.
"At just one pound and .29-inch thick, the 9.7-inch iPad Air is much svelter than previous full-sized models," reported TIME's Harry McCracken. "And except for the smaller screen, the 7.9-inch iPad Mini with Retina has almost exactly the same potent components as its big brother, as well as the same ten-hour battery life."
According to McCracken, the two Apple tablets benefit from the Cupertino-based organization's iTunes app store's 475,000 iPad-optimized apps.
"It's best tablet you can buy, in two convenient sizes," he added.
The iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display ranked together as a unit on TIME's top list gadgets of 2013. The two iPads placed second, losing to the Google Chromecast.
The rank for the iPads is better compared to the iPhone 5s, which placed fifth. The iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display managed to beat the Nokia Lumia 1020, Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, Xbox One, and Pebble Smartwatch.
