"This is due to a combination of factors, including Apple's promotion of giving gift cards with purchases of the iPad Air and iPad Mini (but not iPad Mini 2nd gen) devices," stated Localytics' Business Analyst Dave Hoch. "This, combined with a smaller base of iPad Air devices and the novelty of the iPad Air (released on November 1st) resulted in the iPad Air dominating on Black Friday weekend."
The original iPad mini ranked as the second-most activated device during the Black Friday weekend with 26 percent, which tied with the iPhone 5c smartphone.
Outside of Apple devices, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch tablet surpassed the Samsung Galaxy S4 for popular devices running on the Google Android platform. Localytics stated the growth for the Kindle device is likely due to Amazon cutting its price, temporarily, by $50.
Overall, it was a positive weekend for Apple as devices by the Cupertino-based organization ranked more frequently in the standings than Android devices. The second-generation iPad mini, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 4s placed after the Galaxy S4. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 was the third Android-based tablet to rank among Localytics' data.
Localytics based its data on a sample of 1 million new devices between Nov. 29 and Dec. 2 against last year's Nov. 22 and Nov. 25 Black Friday weekend.
