Microsoft's smartphone operating system accomplished a major feat in Italy as Windows Phone toppled Apple's iOS in the country's market share.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform was one of two smartphone operating systems to increase its market share percentages in Italy. Windows Phone increased its smartphone operating system market share by 2.9 percentage points between the three months ending in September 2012 and the same period in 2013.

With the 2.9 percent increase, Windows Phone was able to improve its position from the third to second most utilized smartphone operating system in Italy. Windows Phone represented 13.7 percent of the Italian smartphone operating system market share figures, up from the 10.8 percent last year.

While Windows Phone improved to second place, the Microsoft mobile platform was no match for Google Android.

The Google smartphone operating system easily maintained its first place position in the market share figures. Android is the other smartphone platform to encounter an increase in its market share, climbing 10.4 percentage points higher than last year.

For the three months ending in September 2013, Android garnered 71.6 percent of the smartphone operating system market share. In comparison to the three months ending in September 2013, Android represented 61.2 percent of the market share.

Apple's iOS saw the highest market share percentage loss based on Kantar Worldpanel's latest figures, falling 4 percentage points and placing in third in the Italian smartphone operating system market share. By the time September 2013 concluded, iOS represented 10.2 percent of the smartphone operating system market share, down from the 14.2 percent last year.

BlackBerry placed fourth. BlackBerry also finished at fourth place last year with 3.4 percent of the market. For the three months ending in September 2013, BlackBerry maintained 2.1 percent of the market share.
