"The Nokia Lumia 1020, pushes the boundaries of digital imaging," read a statement for the device on the CES website. "With a 41 megapixel sensor and Nokia's innovative PureView technology, the Lumia 1020 is able produce some of the sharpest images of any camera."
The Lumia 1020 is the sole smartphone in the category and is in the same company as the Nikon 1 AW1, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7, Samsung Galaxy NX, Sony 4K Handycam Camcorder, Sony Action Cam Point-of-View HD Video Camera, Sony HDR-MV1 Music Video Recorder, Sony QX Series "Lens Style" Cameras, and the VIRB and VIRB Elite.
"This is clear recognition of how the Lumia 1020's superior imaging capabilities stand shoulder to shoulder with dedicated digital cameras and camcorders from manufacturers such as Nikon, Panasonic and Sony," said Adam Fraser on Nokia Conversations.
According to Fraser, the Lumia 1020 scored highly across all judging criteria by a panel of designers, engineers and journalists.
He added, "Ranking alongside compact digital cameras, digital system cameras and camcorders, judges were looking out for engineering qualities, user value and how the design and innovation of each product directly compared to other products in the marketplace. Landing a place on the honoree's table rounds off a fantastic year for PureView and the Lumia 1020."
The Lumia 1020's features include a 4.5-inch screen with 1,280x768 pixels covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The new Windows Phone 8 device has 32GB of internal storage for 2GB of RAM. The device includes a rear-facing camera with a 41-megapixel sensor and front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The smartphone also packs a 2,000mAh battery.
