Sony confirmed that owners of the popular Xperia Z smartphone will be getting a new version of Android before 2013 is over. That's right folks, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been scheduled for a December rollout.
Sony Mobile took to its blog soon after Google announced and released Android 4.4 KitKat to quell the number of inquiries concerning which devices would receive the update and when. In its post, the Japanese electronics giant also took the time to give some information regarding the older Android 4.3 Jelly Bean upgrade.
"We're pleased to tell you that we'll start rolling Android 4.3 for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month*," Sony Mobile wrote in a Nov. 7 post.
A quick look at the calendar (and a dash of common sense) indicates that December will be the rollout date. The asterisk at the end of the sentence refers to the staggered nature of Android rollouts - not everyone will get it at the same time since upgrades are usually pushed out in batches, and there are carriers that can slow down the process.
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean isn't much of an upgrade, and mainly brings under-the-hood performance tweaks. Android 4.4 KitKat, on the other hand, brings far more drastic changes to the operating system, and lucky for Xperia Z owners, it's been confirmed for the device, although it probably won't land until 2014.
