Microsoft's Windows Phone platform has proved itself to be competition against Apple's iOS as the latest smartphone operating system market shares were released for Germany.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, Windows Phone increased its smartphone platform market share by six percentage points. The six percentage points helped elevated Windows Phone's as the third most-utilized smartphone operating system during the three months ending in September 2013.

By the time September concluded, Windows Phone accounted for 8.5 percent of the market share, which is up from the 2.5 percent during the three months ending in September 2012.

Despite the increase, Windows Phone could not topple Google Android or Apple. Windows Phone was 2.2 percentage points away from matching Apple's smartphone platform.

iOS maintained its second place position, but unlike Windows Phone, the Apple smartphone platform saw a dip in its market share. iOS finished the three months ending in September this year with 10.7 percent of the smartphone operating system market share, however, the figure is 1.5 percentage points down from the same period last year. Apple had previously garnered 12.2 percent of the German smartphone platform market share.

Apple and Microsoft was not match for Android.

The Google smartphone operating system easily crushed its competition with 77.9 percent of the smartphone operating system market share for the three months ending in September 2013. Android, however, slipped by 0.2 percentage points compared to the same period in 2012.

BlackBerry held fourth place for another quarter. BlackBerry fell by 0.7 percentage points, therefore giving the mobile platform 0.9 percent of the smartphone operating system market share in Germany when September 2013 concluded.
