The Google Play editions of the popular Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One smartphones were created for one main reason: to give fans of the devices an option that runs stock Android and can be upgraded quickly. Now that Android 4.4 KitKat has been released, let's take a look at when these two devices will get the new operating system.

To put it simply, it's unclear which device will get Android 4.4 KitKat first. KitKat is currently only available on the recently-released Nexus 5 smartphone.

"Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks," Google wrote on the official Android blog on Halloween, the day KitKat was announced

A quick look at the calendar reveals that this means Android 4.4 KitKat will land on the Galaxy S4 and One Google Play edition phones sometime in November. Google typically updates its Nexus devices to a new Android within a couple weeks, so the firmware shouldn't be too far off. According to one insider, the HTC One Google Play edition should land during the first half of November, although it has not been confirmed officially nor is it evident if this applies to the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition.

Android 4.4 KitKat introduces a more colorful, cleaner look to Android fans and integrates Google Now into more phone functions than ever before.
