Google's new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system might only be officially available on the also-new Nexus 5 handset, but owners of the older Nexus 4 can get a headstart now that Android 4.4 AOSP ROMs have been released.

Google began pushing out the Android 4.4 source code to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Oct. 31, the same day it revealed KitKat to the public for the first time. What this means is that developers can start working on their custom ROMS.

Paranoid Android, a few others, have already gone ahead and released an Android 4.4 ROM for the Nexus 4. These ROMS are essentially the pure, stock firmwares, and don't even contain the new Google Launcher. Still, those who flash their Nexus 4 with the ROM will be able to get a feel for the new interface and its new quirks.

The usual warning label applies: unless you have experience flashing Android phones, it's best to simply wait for the official rollout due to the risk of damaging the phone permanently.

Those still brave enough can find the Paranoid Android Nexus 4 Android 4.4 KitKat ROM here.

Luckily, the Nexus 4 won't have to wait long until Android 4.4 KitKat is pushed out for it. Google confirmed that while the Nexus 5 is the only current Nexus device that has an official Android 4.4 version, other Nexus devices, including the Nexus 4, will receive the upgrade sometime in November.
