The Government of Illinois will grant temporary driving licenses to undocumented immigrants starting on December, according to news agency EFE.

The service for undocumented immigrants will take place mainly in the offices of the city of Chicago, where they will be able to obtain their license, and will receive assistance in many languages such as Spanish, Korean, Polish and Chinese. The purpose of providing driving licenses is to implement greater security in the highways of Illinois since immigrants don't have a social security number.

The news agency explains that to get their license, every immigrant will have to prove they have lived in the state for over a year, pay $30 and present an ID or a document with their name, date of birth and signature.

The agencies in charge of the service will conduct vision and driving tests, and will not provide a license if either exam is failed. The temporary licenses are mailed to the home of all applying immigrants.

According to data from the office of Jesse White, the Secretary of State of Illinois, it's expected that close to 300 thousand undocumented immigrants will request a driving license but that only those who make an appointment will be taken into consideration.

EFE highlights that the Consulate of Mexico in Chicago said that the number of Mexican workers that will apply for a license is close to 250 thousand, approximately 600 immigrants per day.

In the United States temporary licenses are usually given to dignitaries and celebrities visiting the country, such as Consuls, artists, athletes or Ambassadors, but the document will not be a valid ID for the person carrying it.

Currently, the temporary driving license is not accepted in other states, and immigrants will not be able to drive outside of Illinois.
