As mobile devices such as tablets and even smartphones begin to play a greater role in home entertainment through streaming and interactive services, mobile operating systems are evolving to better address that need. If a new report is correct, then the next version of Android, Android 4.4 KitKat, will bring some heavy support for television viewing.
According to Korean news outlet ETNews, Android 4.4 KitKat will come with some enhanced features that allow it to run more smoothly on larger screens. It seems that Google is taking television entertainment very seriously, and plans on bolstering its own platform in order to better compete against rivals like Apple and Samsung.
"A number of industry insiders said 'I heard Google say "the next OS has greatly improved its utilization in TV. In particular, there will be many changes in the interface between smart devices and the TV,"'" writes ETNews.
The specifics of how this strategy will be implemented are still at large, as Google has not released any details regarding Android 4.4 KitKat. Other than a few aesthetic changes to the overall interface and possible 64-bit support, little is known about Android 4.4 KitKat. Until Google confirms anything, it's best to take everything with a healthy dose of salt.
The Mountain View giant has been mum ever since announcing Android 4.4 along with its promotional partnership with the KitKat candy bar, but answers should come soon. Although several rumored dates for the Android 4.4 KitKat reveal have come and gone, Google is said to be working on unveiling the operating system before November comes around, with Oct. 31 the new go-to date.
