A Navy recruiter who had been relieved of duty at a naval base in Millington, Tenn. opened fire outside the facility on Thursday afternoon.

The facility was on lockdown after the shooting, USA Today reports. Navy officials confirmed that the incident occurred near Naval Support Activity Midsouth in Millington, which is a suburb of Memphis.

The shooting occurred inside the National Guard Armory just outside the base after the suspect retrieved a small handgun from his car, local police said.

NBC station WMC TV in Memphis reported that two people near the base were shot, and that they are both in noncritical condition. He was then tackled by two soldiers and taken into custody by the Millington Police Department.

"I'm sure there could have been more injury if they hadn't taken him into custody," Chief Rita Stanback from the Millington Police Department said at a press conference.

One victim was shot in the foot and another was shot in the leg. Both victims are National Guard employees.

The base lockdown has since been lifted. The base said that it is not under "an active shooter situation."

The base in Millington is one of the Tennessee's largest employers. More than 7,500 military and civilians work at the base, which serves as a center for logistical support, Navy personnel, recruiting and a finance center for the Army Corps of Engineers.

The incident occurred just six weeks after Aaron Alexis shot and killed 12 people and injured three others in a shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
