Get ready, "Doctor Who" fans: the Day of the Doctor is quickly approaching.
A new teaser for the landmark 50th anniversary special has been released, and it promises to be an epic episode that hints at the show's past, present and future.
The teaser shows past Doctors and the current Doctor, Matt Smith, as well as a wealth of references from the show over the years.
In the trailer, the Doctor says, "I've been running all my lives. Through time and space. Every second of every minute of every day for over 900 years. I fought for peace in a universe at war. Now the time has come to face the choices I have made in the name of the Doctor. Our future depends on one single moment of one impossible day, the day I've been running from all my life. The Day of the Doctor."
According to Mashable, the 75-minute episode, titled "The Day of the Doctor," will feature the unprecedented cicumstance in which the present and past Time Lords appear together. Hurt's character will be an older, darker version of the Doctor.
Matt Smith is current Doctor 11, and David Tennant is number 10.
"'The Day of the Doctor' is nearly here," Smith said in a statement. "Hope you all enjoy. There's lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now."
The episode will be one of the last ones featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor. It was recently announced that Peter Capaldi will be succeeding Smith as the 12th regeneration of the Time Lord. Capaldi is a 55-year-old Scottish actor known for playing the acerbic Malcolm Tucker in BBC political comedy "The Thick Of It" and in the film "In the Loop."
Co-stars Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper will also make appearances in the anniversary episode. Tennant, who is starring in the BBC America crime drama "Broadchurch," shared his feelings about filming the episode with Entertainment Weekly.
"I suppose you'd expect me to say we're new best friends and I love him like a brother," Tennant said. "But that is sort of how it was. I had a fantastic time and that wouldn't necessarily have been the case. I'm coming back onto a show that's effectively somebody else's show and used to be mine and that's potentially quite a weird situation to be in. Going back to something I knew so well and had such fun memories of might have backfired. It's a quite rare set of circumstances: Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig don't get to play James Bond next to each other. But actually it felt familiar enough that it was like coming home and working with Matt proved to be a real joy.
"I hope I'm speaking for him when I say we really enjoyed bouncing of each other and playing sort of two aspects of the same character," Tennant continued. "It was everything that I hoped it might be and nothing that I feared it could be."
The 50th anniversary special will be followed by an extraordinarily special Christmas episode in which Peter Capaldi will be introduced as the tweflth incarnation of the Doctor. Capaldi is expected to bring his trademark sarcasm and quirkiness to the role.
