Peru will play its final match under Coach Sergio Markarian when it faces Bolivia in its final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
Markarian announced his resignation this weekend after failing to lead the Peruvians to a World Cup berth in Brazil next summer. Despite the failure, the coach wants his team to play its final match with pride.
"This is the last [qualifying] match and we're going to play as if it were the most important," Markarian said, according to Euro Sport. "It's surely my last match with the national team, I feel great sadness at leaving this job."
"I leave with more players consolidated [in the Peru team] than I found," Markarian added. "We have definitely built a squad for the future ... the directors backed me all the time. I tried to do my best but it wasn't enough."
Unfortunately, Markarian will finish out his career without cheers or appreciation from any fans as Peru continues to serve punishment for crowd problems in the loss against Uruguay last month.
Peru holds a record of four wins, two draws, and nine defeats in 15 matches during this qualifying cycle. The team has scored 16 goals while conceding 25, but had a chance to make a run earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Bolivia sits at the bottom of the standings after accruing a record of two wins, five draws, and eight losses.
Prediction: Peru will win 2-0 at home.
Start Time: Kick-off starts at 10:15 p.m. EST
