Ukraine and Poland will face off in a crucial World Cup Qualifier on Friday.
Both teams are still in the race for first place in Group H, but must win in order to stay alive. The Ukrainians sit in second place with 15 points, just one point behind first-place England. England and Ukraine recently faced off in Kiev and drew 0-0. Poland sits in fourth place with 13 and could pull within one of England if the Three Lions draw with Montenegro in their upcoming game.
The situation becomes trickier when Montenegro is thrown into the equation because that squad also has 15 points and could create a tremendous imbalance if it manages to defeat England.
So what does each team need from Friday?
For Ukraine, a win would give it 18 points; to retain that spot, a draw between England and Montenegro is imperative. If that scenario played out then the Ukraine would only need a win in its final match to secure the top spot in the group. Fortunately, the team will face off against San Marino in its final game; San Marino has been the worst team in the entire UEFA Qualifiers with one goal scored and 43 conceded. Ukraine recently defeated San Marino 9-0.
A win for Poland is also imperative. A draw in the other match is also of vital importance as it would keep Poland just one point behind England for the top spot in the group. However, the Poles take on the Brits on Tuesday and could lock up first place with a win in that game.
Prediction: Ukraine defeated Poland 3-1 in Warsaw and has a decided advantage here. Expect a 3-0 Ukrainian win.
Start Time: Kick-off starts at 2 p.m. EST.
