It's been a long time since Samsung has updated its popular 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, but it looks like that will all change soon. Not only is the Galaxy S3 slated to receive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean soon, the handset has been unofficially confirmed to receive Android 4.4 KitKat as well.
An XDA Developer forum member concerned about Samsung's region-locking SIM strategy stated that when pressed for more information how the process works, a Samsung UK customer service representative revealed the feature would extend to the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.4 KitKat. The region lock is meant to prevent consumers from purchasing a Samsung device in one part of the world, and using a SIM card from another.
It's not an official confirmation, but the fact that a Samsung rep hinted at a new change in Android 4.4 indicates that the company has already started (at the very least, the early stages of) development.
Android 4.4 KitKat has been announced only in the form of a cross promotion with Nestle. Google is expected to reveal details about the operating system sometime in mid-to-late October.
What is official, however, is Samsung's aggressive push to update its devices to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, presumably because Android 4.3 contains Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, a requirement for full connectivity with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Samsung announced in early September that it was scrapping the planned Android 4.2.2 update for the Galaxy S3 and instead focusing on pushing out Android 4.3. The upgrade should arrive sometime in November.
