On November 23, Whovians of the world will watch one of the most anticipated "Doctor Who" episodes yet-- at the same time.
The BBC announced that on November 23, the network will simulcast the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary episode, "The Day of the Doctor," in at least 75 countries, allowing "Doctor Who" fans to watch the landmark episode together. It will be simulcast in the U.S. on BBC America, Entertainment Weekly confirms.
The episode will also be shown in 3-D in select theaters. More details about the 3-D screening will be announced in the coming weeks.
"The Doctor has always been a time traveler - now he's traveling time zones," "Doctor Who" executive producer Steven Moffat said in a statement. "On the 23rd of November, it won't be the bad guys conquering the Earth - everywhere it will be 'The Day of the Doctor!'"
"The Day of the Doctor" will be a 75-minute episode starring current Doctor Matt Smith and co-star Jenna Coleman with previous Time Lord David Tennant. The episode will also feature John Hurt and Billie Piper. Hurt's character will be an older, darker version of the Doctor.
The episode will be one of the last ones featuring Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. It was recently announced that Peter Capaldi will be succeeding Smith as the 12th regeneration of the Time Lord. Capaldi is a 55-year-old Scottish actor known for playing the acerbic Malcolm Tucker in BBC political comedy "The Thick Of It" and in the film "In the Loop."
Tennant, who is starring in the BBC America crime drama "Broadchurch," shared his feelings about filming the episode with Entertainment Weekly.
"I suppose you'd expect me to say we're new best friends and I love him like a brother," Tennant said. "But that is sort of how it was. I had a fantastic time and that wouldn't necessarily have been the case. I'm coming back onto a show that's effectively somebody else's show and used to be mine and that's potentially quite a weird situation to be in. Going back to something I knew so well and had such fun memories of might have backfired. It's a quite rare set of circumstances: Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig don't get to play James Bond next to each other. But actually it felt familiar enough that it was like coming home and working with Matt proved to be a real joy.
"I hope I'm speaking for him when I say we really enjoyed bouncing of each other and playing sort of two aspects of the same character," Tennant continued. "It was everything that I hoped it might be and nothing that I feared it could be."
The 50th anniversary special will be followed by an extraordinarily special Christmas episode in which Peter Capaldi will be introduced as the tweflth incarnation of the Doctor. Capaldi is expected to bring his trademark sarcasm and quirkiness to the role.
Tune in to the simulcast of "The Day of the Doctor" on November 23 on BBC America.
