The Chicago Blackhawks will lift the Stanley Cup banner on Tuesday when they host the Washington Capitals in the opening game of the 2013-14 season.
Chicago won the Stanley Cup last season after taking down the Boston Bruins on the road in Game 6. The team is expected to hold a red carpet event from 4 to 4:30 p.m. CST before opening the doors of the United Center at 5 p.m. for a plethora of activities prior to the game.
Washington and Chicago actually finished off their preseason with a matchup against one another this weekend; Chicago pulled off a 4-3 overtime victory in that game.
"We were a little bit behind tonight," said Capitals coach Adam Oates, according to the team's official website, "I thought; a little slow. We turned it over too much.
"It was a good game overall by a lot of guys," added Capitals forward Jason Chimera in the same report. "We fought back and got some points."
The teams also faced off in a preseason encounter on Sept. 20. Chicago won that one 5-4 in the shootout.
Regarding the overall preseason, in which the team went 4-0-4, Oates stated that he was satisfied.
"We obviously did some things well," said Oates. "Goaltending I thought had a really good preseason. We weren't healthy at all, the whole time, so we didn't get to see all our guys. But I think we're going in the right direction."
Prediction: Washington ruins Chicago's banner raising ceremony with a 4-3 win in overtime.
Start Time: 8 p.m. EST
