Henrik Stenson extended his lead Friday during Day 2 of the PGA Tour Championship, ending the day with a 4-under 66 to build a four-shot lead over Adam Scott.
Stenson - who won the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, the second leg of the of the FedEx Cup - rattled off three birdies in the opening four holes at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, playing with only 13 clubs in the bag after he broke his 4-wood on the practice. Stenson shot 130 total after 36 holes matches his career low putting in position to win the $10 million grand prize for the FedEX Cup.
"I don't think I've ever started a round with 13, not that I can remember. It might have happened," said Stenson. "But in general, I try to keep it at 14. Most rounds I manage to finish with 14, as well."
Scott, the 2013 Masters champion who also won the first leg of the FedEx Cup - the The Barclays in New Jersey, ran three birdies on Friday, feeling confident he can take the $10 million prize money.
"I'm in good shape," said Scott. "There's only one guy ahead of me, I know it's four shots but it's not that much over 36 holes. I feel I can reel him in."
Tiger Woods, who came into the tournament ranked the best player in the world, struggled on Friday, finishing 26th in a field of 30 golfers.
Woods made five birdies, but six dropped shots in four holes left him four over at 73. Woods had failed to notch a single birdie during the opening round of the PGA Tour Championship and started Day 2 on a more positive note until Woods double-bogeyed 14th and triple-bogeyed the 17th hole after putting his shot into the water hazard.
"Just ran out of gas. My legs were just tired. It's been just a long, long grind," said Woods after completing his round. "I'm still in contention," he added. "There's 36 holes. This is not a sprint, it's tournament golf. It's a marathon. You've got to keep plugging around."
