Metal Gear Solid 5, one of the most mysterious games set to appear in the near future, finally revealed some of its world at the Tokyo Game Show, delivering a lengthy gameplay demo. The in-depth video can be seen here as well as below, but viewers should be warned that the video is in Japanese.
The demo begins with Big Boss overlooking some sort of military camp during a rainstorm. Big Boss is able to use telescopic sites to pick out the guards that are guarding the camp at a distance, which are highlighted so players can see easier in the murky night time light. Once Big Boss gets moving he approaches the camp by using the rocky terrain to avoid being seen by the guards and the spotlights around the camp. After taking out a guard in a tower using a silenced pistol, the player is able to stealthily crawl to the main gate and pick the lock to enter the camp. The first sign of trouble emerges when the player takes out another guard, which draws the attention of a man in a jeep. The player is able to take out that guard and moves both bodies to the bushes to avoid further incident before jumping behind the wheel of the jeep. Players are able to drive the car in both first and third perspective.
After hiding the car behind some fencing, Big Boss tosses another guard out of a tower and uses the spotlight to further scout out the camp. Once inside a new part of the camp, the player is able to see guards through cover, using this tactical vision to sneak up on a guard and use him as a human shield before dispatching him. After finding the target in need of evacuation, we see the overhead map brought up, which will give the player the positions of any guards they have spotted already, as well as moving vehicles. Players can choose between a tactical version of the map or a more photorealistic map. After setting the evacuation point the player must carry the prisoner and flee from the camp. During this sequence the player is spotted, but the player is able to use a slow motion mode to take out the guard before he alerts anyone else. The player goes to move the body only to find another guard, and uses the corpse as a distraction to take out the new threat. The helicopter arrives, drawing the enemy's attention, but Big Boss is able to take out a remaining guard and get on the helicopter. Players fly away while taking out more enemies from the helicopter as it flies over the camp.
Overall, the demo is impressive and shows the amount of detail that will be possible with the Fox Engine. Look out for more information about Metal Gear Solid 5, including its release date, right here as the game continues to take shape.
