Benfica will look to reverse its fortunes in European competition when it takes on Anderlecht on Tuesday.

A year ago, the Portuguese contingent was drawn into a group that included Barcelona, Spartak Moscow and Celtic. Many expected Benfica to get out of the group but they faltered and wound up finishing third. For their troubles they wound up in the Europa League where they made a run to the final against Chelsea. Unfortunately, Benfica fell in the big game and was unable to claim a European title.

This year, the team is part of a more favorable group that includes the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Anderlecht and Olympiacos. Despite being favorites in this group, Coach Jorge Jesus is cautious about claiming victory.

"It is a very balanced group, in which the teams are very balanced, except for PSG, who are the favorites," said Jesus, according to ESPN. "Anderlecht are a good team, the champions of Belgium, and have some players with high quality, mainly Aleksandr Mitrovic and Matias Suarez.

Regarding his team's mission, he added, "It is important to win. We know now that we have some experience, that if you make 10 points it is likely to qualify you. The motivation and responsibility to be in the Champions League is great."

Anderlecht made their first appearance in five years in last year's tournament, but only managed one victory and four goals.

Prediction: Benfica will win this opener at home by a score of 2-0.
