The Apple iPhone 5c is the first low-cost smartphone from the Cupertino giant (some are saying the "c" is for cheap). Because of the lower price, the iPhone 5c has much of the same hardware as last year's iPhone 5. However, there are a few new features that might put it in the running with some of the new smartphones coming to market right now, like the LG G2.
Display and Size
The LG G2 was announced late in the summer with a focus on a "designed around you" theme. As such, the 5.2-inch screen on the LG G2 is purportedly the most comfortable large screen size an average hand can hold, according to LG Electronics.
Meanwhile, Apple fans might wish for an updated screen on the new iPhone 5c (or at least, the iPhone 5s), but they're not going to get it. The iPhone 5c and its more expensive sibling comes with the same 4-inch Retina display as the iPhone 5.
The LG G2's screen comes with a 1920 x 1080p Full HD resolution, which beats the iPhone 5c's 1136 x 640p as well, with a 424 pixels-per-inch pixel density, as compared with the iPhone 5c's 325ppi.
Size
With the larger screen comes a slightly larger chassis, which is where the iPhone 5c might have an edge. The LG G2 comes with a 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9mm body, while the iPhone 5c has a smaller 124.4 x 59.2 x 8.97mm chassis. However, it is worth mentioning that LG has kept its newest flagship rather slim, comparable to the iPhone 5c.
Camera
Another aspect where the high-powered LG G2 will certainly beat the iPhone 5c is with photography. Simply put, the 13-megapixel camera on the LG G2 is the industry standard, unless you fiddle with the sensor size or aperture to beef up a, say, four or 8-megapixel camera (like the HTC One and the Apple iPhone 5s, respectively).
In any case, the iPhone 5c did not get the updated camera, so it is still rocking the 8-megapixel shooter from the iPhone 5.
Storage
The iPhone 5c, and every iPhone, does not come with microSD support. This limits the amount of storage you can have on your iPhone to whatever Apple built in the device.
The same is true, however, with the LG G2 - which is the only premium Android smartphone right now that doesn't include microSD storage, besides the unibody HTC One.
That means that the iPhone 5c and the LG G2 tie for storage, because both come in 16GB and 32GB models, and that's all the storage you get. However, realistically, the iPhone 5c's storage will last longer before maxing out, because it's not storing 1080p video or photographs taken with a 13-megapixel sensor.
Other Features
The iPhone 5c has a few unique features that may put it over the edge for someone comparing it to the LG G2. First, the iPhone 5c will be released with the new iOS 7 operating system, which, if you like the new flat color scheme, is packed with lots of new features, including a Siri AI assistant that is now out of beta.
The other, more obvious, advantage of the iPhone 5c is its bright color shell. The iPhone 5c comes in 5 candy-colored plastic chassis, bringing to mind the original iMacs, which were incredibly popular.
The LG G2 isn't without its unique features, but, as far as having a new operating system goes, the LG G2 is lagging behind other Android devices with 4.2.2.
However, the LG G2 has a new feature on its back cover that might bring some panache to the device: the "Rear Key," which is the volume rocker and power button placed on the back of the LG G2, right where your pointer finger rests when you're talking on the phone. No other smartphone has that feature, and it could be considered an innovation - though how revolutionarily convenient or ergonomic is yet to be seen.
Release Dates and Prices
The LG G2 and the iPhone 5c are launching around the same time frame. The LG G2 just recently launched on major carriers in the U.S. while the iPhone 5c is launching on Sprint, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile on Friday, Sept. 20. The iPhone 5c has a base price of about $100 with a two-year agreement (further discounted to $79 at Wal-Mart) for the 16GB model, while the 16GB model of the LG G2 comes for about $200 with the same commitment.
