On Saturday night, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez attempts to put his name alongside some of the legends in Mexican boxing - names like Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Julio Cesar Chavez - if he can somehow defeat the best boxer in the world - Floyd Mayweather.
Defeating Mayweather will not be an easy task. In fact, no one has ever defeated the man known "Money" to his legion of fans and haters, sporting a 44-0 professional record with 20 knockouts when he enters the squared ring against Alvarez.
As the younger fighter, Alvarez - the bigger and more powerful boxer of the two - will need to wear down Mayweather, preferably working the body with clean shots to slow down the older Mayweather, much like "Canelo" did against Josesito Lopez last year.
Ideally, Alvarez should impose his will as the bigger fighter, looking to put Mayweather away as early as possible. However, Mayweather's in-ring stamina is second to none and if Alvarez sees an opening where he can send the champion reeling, he must capitalize on it as soon as he sees the opportunity to put a hurt on Mayweather.
While that sounds like an easy game plan, the fact is that Alvarez has never faced a fighter of Mayweather's caliber. While most 36-years-old boxers have gone through some wear-and-tear from years in the ring that could age most boxers overnight, Mayweather has hardly been hit hard throughout his career, using his blinding speed and natural athleticism to make bigger and more powerful punchers look silly trying to bring him down. Alvarez has never seen the speed and agility that Mayweather brings to the ring.
The closest fighter Alvarez has faced that resembles anything close Mayweather's style was against "Sugar" Shane Mosley - who fought "Canelo" last year at the age of 40 and clearly had eroded speed and reflexes compared to his glory days and failed to keep up with the much younger Mexican fighter.
Mosley, who is helping Alvarez in his training camp, has been in the ring with both "Canelo" and "Pretty Boy," believes that Mayweather is underestimating the young Mexican boxer.
"You can underestimate Canelo, you know, by his baby face, thinking, 'OK, this guy can't be on the same level,'" Mosley said during the fourth and final episode of Showtime's All Access: Mayweather Vs. Canelo. "And then he can fool you. His punches felt pretty strong. One body shot he threw was very painful. You would think that he's just a power puncher, but then he can also box and counter, too."
Despite all these factors working in Alvarez's favor - from Mosley's and Oscar De Hoya's sage advice to his youth and power, in the end, the best pound-for-pound boxer will continue atop the mountain. Expect Mayweather to use his superior speed and vast ring knowledge to be enough to edge out a 12-round decision over Alvarez.
