The upcoming season of Fox comedy "New Girl" will be a family affair.

Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) sister will be debuting on the show in early 2014. Co-producer Brett Baer told TVLine said that her sister will "add a depth charge in the fabric of the loft." There is a chance that Zooey's real-life sister, Emily, could appear as Jess' troublemaking sister on the show. However, the chance is pretty small.

"It's an idea that is obviously right in front of us and it's definitely something to explore," said co-producer Dave Finkel. "But [Emily] has her own television show, so we're not sure if it's even a possibility."

Viewers will also be getting acquainted with Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) family in season three.

Schmidt will have a bit of trouble with his love life next season, which will prompt some soul-searching. "He's going to slide a little bit and not be so on top of his game," Finkel revealed.

Baer added, "He's definitely on a journey to figure himself out this season. He's going to be forced to confront himself, and get in touch with the little guy inside of him." While on his personal journey, viewers will meet some of his family members, who will appear in the second half of the season. "You'll get a vision of what his childhood and homelife were like growing up, the way we did with Nick last year," Baer confirmed.

The characters will be facing some other issues in addition to family drama. Although Nick and Jess have finally gotten together, there will be some intimacy issues that may create a rocky start to their relationship. Jess will go to Schmidt (Max Greenfield) for advice on how to please Nick in the bedroom, but Schmidt's advice turns out to be terrible. That specific episode will feature the flashback to Nick's college days.

The new season will also see the "New Girl" living up to her namesake. As the new girl at her teaching job, Jess will have a hard time fitting in with the "cool" teacher crowd, and will be given a hard time by two "mean girl" types who dislike Jess' goody-twoshoes personality.

Some familiar characters will also be returning next season. Damon Wayans Jr. will come back to the series to reprise his role as Coach, a character he played in the show's pilot. At the time, Wayans could not appear on the rest of the season because of his commitment to "Happy Endings." Since "Happy Endings" has been canceled, the hilarious actor is coming back to resume his Coach character for a season three story arc.

TVLine reports that Brenda Song will also make a brief comeback in the third season. Although Song will be busy appearing on the new comedy "Dads," she will make a quick return to the show.

Season three of "New Girl" premieres on Fox on Tuesday, September 17.
