It’s the best time of the year. It’s time to tie your shoes, grab the lunch box and hurry outside to catch the big yellow bus. It’s time to go back to school, the most exuberant time in every child’s heart. They hold onto it dearly, clutching it tightly to their hearts as the hum tunes about the excitement and jubilance of heading back into the classroom and stocking up on homework. Utter bliss.

All sarcasm aside, however, it is that time of year, unfortunately. But while you're sulking your way through morning classes, dwelling on the hasty pass of summer, think on the bright side. You’re not the only one suffering. Not only are your fellow classmates drowning in schoolwork, but so are the worlds favorite vampires.

“The Vampire Diaries” makes its return next month and will shift gears from Mystic Falls to Whitmore College. The new freshmen will have plenty on their plates as the enter the college stratosphere, dealing with heavy course loads, evil professors, new friends and, of course, more relationship drama.

Ever since Elena and Damon became exclusive at the end of last season, poor Stefan has been forgotten. In fact, he lies at the bottom of a river, all chained up in a box. Things aren’t looking good for Stefan, to say the least. Luckily, Elena has trouble letting go completely and could feel the need to return to Mystic Falls to see if he’s alive and well.

“[Elena] has this weird feeling something is going on. It’s this cosmic connection you have with someone that you’ve spent so much time with and I don’t know if that will go away,” said Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena and her counterpart, Katherine, on the show. “She knows she’s in love with Damon, but she still cares for Stefan and wants to make sure he’s OK… and when she finds out what he’s been through, it’s not easy for her.”

Watch out Damon.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW October 3.
