Mexico's Olympics team is on their way to win the most medals since the 1968 Olympics, fittingly it took place in Mexico City.
The country is set to tie the number of medals won since 2000 Sydney Olympics. Currently, Mexico has five medals, while the Sydney Games had 6 medals, also tied with their performance at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
The most medals Mexico won were nine at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.
At the 2012 London Summer Olympics, Mexico has won three silvers, courtesy of German Sanchez and Ivan Garcia in the men's synchronized 10m platform, Paola Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco in the women' synchronized 10m platform, and Aida Roman in women's archery. Two bronze medals were awarded to Mariana Avitia in women's archery and Laura Sanchez in women's diving 3m springboard.
But with their men's football team advancing to the finals, it guarantees them at least silver if they lose to the winner of the Brazil vs. South Korea match. Their placing in the finals also guarantees a tie with their performance in Sydney and Los Angeles.
The Mexican team defeated Japan 3-1 in front of more than 82,000 fans at a wet Wembley Stadium today. During the game, Japan scored the first goal, by Yuki Otsu, just after 12 minutes into the game.
