In California and Texas the movie "Instructions Not Included" by Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez has managed to collect, on average, $28,800 dollars from each of the 347 complexes in which it has been played according to website VOA.
The comedian's movie managed to collect $10 million dollars on Labor Day alone, according to the article, placing it in competition with other films like "The Butler" and Disney's "Planes". The film took advantage of good publicity from Eugenio Derbez who is currently the center of attention in Spanish-speaking media across the nation.
"Instructions Not Included" is the story of an Acapulco bachelor who is visited by one of his former girlfriend, Julie, and their daughter Maggie. Julie leaves Maggie with Derbez, and then Derbez decides to go looking for his daughter's mother in Los Angeles.
Newspaper El Universal shared a press release which says that "Instructions Not Included is the biggest success recorded for a Mexican movie in its premiere in the United States." The movie also features actresses such as Alessandra Rosaldo, Arcelia Ramírez and Karla Souza and it's expected to premiere on September 20 on Mexican cinemas under the name "No Se Aceptan Devoluciones".
In an interview with newspaper Milenio, Eugenio Derbez said that he's directing films out of necessity. He said, "Since my first show, when someone else was directing, the project wouldn't come out as I imagined it. It happened to me with 'Al Derecho y Al Derbez' and so on. To land the concept as I envisioned, I had to direct it. I didn't want to act but the producers and distributors asked me to for commercial reasons".
He declared himself a fan of Woody Allen and his humor, adding: "but I think his last few works have been bitter. He became grumpy with age".
Finally, he shared some details on the upcoming Mexican edition of Saturday Night Live on which he's working on; he won't touch political subjects if the network doesn't allow it.
