IPhone 5 rumors are never in short supply and this week was not an exception with an entire new set of them coming out.
The first major rumor to stir up an internet frenzy was a claim reporting the phone finally being unveiled on September 12 followed by a September 21 release. After all the speculation over the highly anticipated release date, actual dates may finally be surfacing.
Apple, reportedly, will not stop there. The company is rumored to be planning also the launch of other major products on the same day or time period including a newer, smaller iPad 4 (iPad mini?), a new iPod nano, and a new iPod touch.
Apple has not redesigned the iPod Nano since its debut in 2010 and sources indicate that the new Nano would have a larger screen and possibly be integrated to the various Apple products, iPads and iPhones included, via the iOS. A nano integration to other Apple products would open the possibility of making calls from the Nano through the iPad or iPhone from a user's wrist since the iPod can be worn as such with third party accessories. Apple could of course redesign the Nano as a wristwatch with the strap already included.
Rumors for the iPad 4/Mini have been surfacing for months as people anticipate what Apple will produce for their latest tablet iteration. Rumors indicate that the iPad Mini will come with a 7.85-inch IGZO display from Sharp that could push out 330 pixels per inch (ppi), according to Wired. This would make it even sharper than the Retina Display of the new iPad that currently delivers 264 ppi.
The smaller size will undoubtedly enable the tablet to be priced in a cheaper range than the normal iPad. The Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7 tablet both start at $199, significantly cheaper than the $600+ of the latest iPad. A smaller, cheaper iPad would enable Apple to compete in that price range and help them re-attract the customers lost to these more portable, affordable options. Prices for the iPad Mini are expected to be between $200 and $300.
Leaked "engineering samples" online show that the iPad Mini will most likely use a 19-pin dock connector that is also expected to be a part of Apple's latest iPhone 5.
The iPad Mini will also run the latest version of Apple's iOS, the iOS 6, which is slated for a fall release. This will enable iPad Mini users access to all of their Apple Cloud files and easy interactivity with other devices running iOS or even the new OS X Mountain Lion.
The sources that created the rumor cited The Wall Street Journal and The Verge as stating that Apple would hold an event the week of September 9.
The other major rumor circulating relates to the iPhone 5 costing a whopping $800. The news created a stir on twitter in which fans bemoaned the new price range. Add in the fact that Sharp Corp. President Takashi Okuda has announced that the iPhone's display is already shipping, and confirmations of a smaller dock and Bluetooth technology and you have a week in which the iPhone was more newsworthy than the Olympics for many.
