While Disney failed to announce any casting news at the D23 expo, insiders have revealed that Ian McDiamird may reprise his role as Emperor Palpatine in "Star Wars Episode VII."

Jedi News reported that the British actor could return as the villainous Palpatine or another unspecified role. "An unnamed source has informed us that Ian McDiarmid is set to return to the galaxy far, far away for a part in 'Episode VII,'" wrote Jedi News.

"The specifics of the role are unclear, but it seems likely that McDiarmid will be returning to his signature role of Palpatine. Whether as the original [Palpatine] or a clone of, we are yet to discern."

However, Jedi News cautioned that the insider information was merely a rumor. "Remember, until confirmed by Lucasfilm this is just a rumor. They are the ONLY people who can confirm this rumor report, or any other," the site added.

McDiarmid last appeared in the short film "The Odds," and the TV movie "Margaret." He also starred in "City of Vice" and "Our Hidden Lives." The actor first appeared in the Star Wars series in "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" and was later featured in the three prequels for which he received praise.

"Star Wars Episode VII" is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin production later this year. The film will be directed by J.J Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy will produce. Michael Arndt is currently writing the script, while Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford are rumored to return to the series. "Star Wars Episode VII" is set for release in 2015.
