Manchester United won the Community Shield on Sunday in a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

The match, which featured the Premier League winning Manchester and the FAP Cup victors Wigan, got the David Moyes era off to a terrific start.

The MVP of the match was Robin Van Persie who scored both of his club's goals. His first tally was a brilliant header from the right side of the box and his second featured some brilliant footwork on the edge of the box and a helpful deflection from Wigan's defense.

Van Persie was not only the hero on the pitch this weekend, but also off of it; he issued a plea to teammate Wayne Rooney to remain with the club.

"Everyone wants Wayne to stay and deep down I think he feels the same," Van Persie said in an interview with The Sun. "One of the reasons I joined Manchester United was to play with Wayne.

"I hope he stays. Not only is he a great goal scorer, he does so much work across the pitch. He hates to lose - that's why you see him one minute pressing for goal, the next minute defending ferociously. He is an asset to any team. He will come good again. He is a strong lad," he added.

Rooney has reportedly asked for a transfer to Chelsea but Manchester United has consistently insisted that it will not sell the striker at any price.

"He is not for sale. It is not changing. That's the answer to your question. I have heard the question. Okay?" said Manchester manager David Moyes in his latest statement, according to ESPN.
