If there’s one thing show creator Shonda Rhimes knows how to do well it’s creating dramatic character relationships that have fans rooting for more. During the last season of Rhimes’ hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” fans were left at the edge of their seats as the fates of several couples were left on the balance.
So what exactly will happen to the many couples of Grey-Sloan Memorial? Rhimes opened up to TVLine in a recent interview about all the relationship drama that will unfold in season 10. First up are new parents Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who seem to have a pretty steady relationship.
Rhimes said the couple “probably” were the happiest of the bunch, but added, “Although with a new baby, [being] post-surgery and the sleep deprivation, I doubt it’s going to be all happiness.”
On the other hand, Mer’s best friend Christina (Sandra Oh) and ex-husband/love-of-her-life Owen (Kevin McKidd) may not be so blissful. During the season 9 finale, Christina finally walked away from their relationship, but the question remains: is it really the end of their love? Rhimes told TVLine that the couple would be moving in “a different direction.”
“We have some really good plans,” the showrunner said. “We’ve really talked about what’s different now and how things have changed, so I don’t feel like we’re planning to tread the same ground we’ve gone over before.”
Fellow on-the-outs couple Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) will also have a lot to work on this season. Rhimes said that there won’t be a definitive “get back together” episode, but their troubles won’t drag “down in misery.”
Ramirez added to TV Guide, however, "[Callie is] reeling, so there's a lot of reactive emotional outbursts and acting out. She doesn't hide it from the hospital how she feels. They wind up in the same place they were at in the beginning of the season. There's the extra element of infidelity, but they're back in the darkness of it and they're shining a light on it."
One couple that will, however, enjoy a bit of coupley bliss will be Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington). Rhimes teased that she “want[s] us to have fun with them” as they navigate their new relationship, “because they’re one of our happiest couples, Jo and Alex are playing our humor a lot, which is nice.”
Unfortunately, Rhimes remained mum of the other “Grey’s” couple, April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams). Fans will just have to wait until the season premiere next month to find out!
“Grey’s Anatomy” returns for season 10 with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, September 26 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
