Wayne Rooney wants to join Chelsea.
According to ESPN, "Wayne Rooney's camp have informed Arsenal that the player has made up his mind to join Chelsea."
The news is the latest development in the lengthy transfer saga. Rooney has reportedly told his current club Manchester United that he wants to leave. The move was prompted by an announcement last month from Coach David Moyes about Rooney being the backup to Robin Van Persie at the forward position.
Once the news of Rooney's discontent came out, a number of clubs made inquiries including Chelsea and Arsenal.
"It happened to us last year and it can happen to them," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about losing Van Persie last summer to Manchester. "Rooney is under contract and has two years to go so it's United who make the decision. But we would not have a problem with the wages of Rooney."
Chelsea has been the more aggressive side and has made a number of offers that have been rejected. Coach Jose Mourinho has been adamant that he will do whatever is necessary to land Rooney this summer.
"We are far away so we are not in England to know every detail but we are doing things in the correct way," Mourinho said according to ESPN. "We made the bid and Manchester United have reacted. Let's see what happens. But we can't do more than we are doing now.
"We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing. We are doing everything in an ethical way, so let's see if things change," he added. "There is no time limit. We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would like to have with us. We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes."
The transfer window ends on August 31.
