New images have been confirmed for what may be one of the biggest changes for the Pokémon franchise.
Select Pokémon from the previous five generations will experience "Mega Evolutions." The new process allows the Pokémon to evolve or transform into a "mega" version of itself.
According to a statement issued by The Pokémon Company International, the "new, awe-inspiring transformation" will take place during battles.

"Pokémon that Mega Evolve will tap into hidden reserves of strength and power that have never been realized in their regular Evolutions, giving players battling with a Mega-Evolved Pokémon a dominant advantage," added The Pokémon Company International. "Mega Evolutions will revolutionize Pokémon battles and usher in a new Pokémon transformation never before seen in the Pokémon world."
A leaked image from Japan's CoroCoro showed six Pokémon that are a part of the "Mega Evolution," such as, Absol, Ampharos, Blaziken, Lucario, Mawile, and the long-confirmed Mewtwo.
It is also confirmed, that Lucario and Mewtwo will transform to "Mega Lucario" and "Mega Mewtwo." The other Pokémon that were part of the magazine leak have yet to be confirmed.
As part of the release of "Pokémon X and Y," a Torchic event will take place over the Internet with an item called "Blazikenite." The item will transform Blaziken into "MegaBlaziken." The event is set to take place from Oct. 12 until a "short period of time." Bulbapedia had noted the distribution event would end Jan. 15, 2014.
A fourth gym leader was also revealed as Korrina of Shalour City. She apparently is knowledgeable about the "Mega Evolution" process.
"Gym Leader Korrina seeks to draw out her Pokémon's strength to reach still greater heights, and it's said that she may hold the key to Mega Evolution! In addition to being a Gym Leader, Korrina is a fantastic roller skater," said Pokémon Company International.
Meanwhile, U.S. Pokémon fans are still awaiting the sixth-gameplay trailer of "Pokémon X and Y" that features the tree-like pocket monster Oorotto. A new English trailer was released featuring the Mega Evolutions, but no sign of Oorotto yet.
"Pokémon X and Y" is set for an Oct. 12, worldwide release date for the Nintendo 3DS.
