Summer is an untamed beast. The sweltering heat and pounding sun make the long days drag on. Sure, at first, it comes as a blessing. It warms our bones and burns off the winter cobwebs. But as we enter the belly of the beast, we realize how a cool breeze and a light dusting of frost on the morning grass helps to lift us through our days. But what the summer lacks most is winter television. Although it caters to several strong, engaging series, the top dogs remain dormant. The winter hosts the best television. It's a time to bundle up on your couch next to a roaring fire. What could be better? Fortunately, during these long months without your favorite television shows to help you survive the work week, there are plenty of behind-the-scene details that help to quench the thirst.

One show in particular with a highly anticipated return is "American Horror Story." According to TVLine, new details on the upcoming third season, titled "Coven," arose on Friday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, which revealed the identities of several key characters and the highly female-drive plot.

"There's a feminist theme throughout 'Coven,' said executive producer Tim Minear. "There are also themes of race and oppression and family - especially mothers and daughters - along with laughs and scares and a few tears." The perfect storm.

Lange informed fans that she'll be playing a witch, adding, "I've shot two days so far, so I don't know who the character is yet. It comes in little dribs and drabs."

Paulson will play Lange's daughter, Cordelia, while Bassett will play Marie Laveau, whose character is based on "a woman in the 1800s who was very influential in the city." Finally, Bates will portray the infamous 1830s New Orleans socialite and serial killer Madame LaLaurie.

"American Horror Story" will return to FX October 9.
